1/16—Day 2 Hilo, Hawaii

Today I got to finally sleep in a little. I had an SAS excursion planned titled “volcano bike adventure.” There were about 15 students and we drove about an hour to the volcanoes. It was a really nice drive, because I was able to see a different area of Hawaii. Once we started to get closer to the volcanoes, we could see steam coming out of the ground, which had to do with the magma being exposed through holes in the ground.
Before this trip, I had pictured volcanoes as mountains with lava coming out of the top, like I learned about in elementary school. But this volcano was a crater, so a giant ditch in the ground with steam coming out of it. It was a little disappointing, since I had this image of a volcano, but it was still wicked cool that I was able to see a volcano. After seeing that volcano, we started biking and seeing different views of the volcano. The tour guide gave us a lot of history about volcanoes, and Hawaii’s environment. We biked to see a “typical volcano” minus the lava. And we also learned about lava tubes, and were able to walk through one. It was almost like an underground cave that was created by lava. Outside of the lava tube was surrounded by a rainforest. The tour guide told us about the different plants and how that particular rainforest consisted of only seven different plants. At the end of the bike tour, we walked through hardened lava from one of the volcanic eruptions… I think it was in 1774. It seriously went on for miles of just black rock with a few small plants that have just started to grow. It was crazy to think that area was once filled with trees. We were actually able to see where some of the trees use to be by these huge holes in the lava. It was a really educational experience and I’m really glad that I signed up for the trip.
Once I got back to the ship, I met up with my friends and heard about what they did for the day. They were able to see sea turtles and went to the market. Even though I had a great time on the volcano tour, I wish I could have done everything! We all got dinner and went on the smoking deck since people bought Hawaiian cigars. Dean Tom came outside and we asked about rumors from previous voyages. He told us about some students started spreading the rumor that they were transporting a bear from one port to the next. And of course all of the staff played along and started putting signs up saying “warning, do not enter” and telling students not to carry food in specific areas. After Dean Tom left we started talking about what funny rumors we could start… word travels fast on this ship! But we didn’t come up with anything good, and ended up playing the ha-ha game. My friend Heather asked me if I wanted to be a part of the “flag group” that she was putting together. Basically, there will be 16 girls and each of us will have one of the countries flags painted on our stomach and we will just take a group picture. I of course was all in and can’t wait! We watched the ship leave the port, played the “cup game” and picked our voyage song.

I got my ticket for the long way round
Two bottles of whiskey for the way
And I sure would like some sweet company
And I’m leaving tomorrow, what do you say?

When I’m gone, when I’m gone
You’re going to miss me when I’m gone
You’re going to miss me by my hair
You’re going to miss me everywhere
Oh, you’re going to miss me when I’m gone

I got my ticket for the long way round
The one with the prettiest views
Its got mountains, its got rivers, its got sights to give you shivers
But it sure would be prettier with you

When I’m gone, when I’m gone
You’re going to miss me when I’m gone
You’re going to miss me by my walk
You’re going to miss me by my talk
Oh, you’re going to miss me when I’m gone

I got my ticket for the long way round
These feet weren’t built to stay too long
And I’ll go there on my own
But you’ll miss me when you’re home
Its for you that I sing this song

When I’m gone, when I’m gone
You’re going to miss me when I’m gone
You’re going to miss me by my hair
You’re going to miss me everywhere
Oh, you’re going to miss me when I’m gone

When I’m gone, when I’m gone
You’re going to miss me when I’m gone
You’re going to miss me by my walk
You’re going to miss me by my talk
Oh, you’re going to miss me when I’m gone
